L'ALBA
MAISON DES TALENTS PARTAGÉS

THE HISTORY

HISTORY

Built in 1877 for Jules Audent, mayor of Charleroi and a key figure in the city’s urban development, the house reflects the transformation of the late 19th century, when the old fortifications gave way to wide, bourgeois boulevards.

It subsequently housed the Italian Consulate, a function it served for several decades, leaving within its walls a legacy deeply tied to the history of Italian immigration in Charleroi.

Today, the house stands as one of the few remaining intact examples of this architectural heritage in Charleroi. It is listed as part of the city’s official heritage and featured in the Charleroi tourist guide. As such, it regularly opens its doors to the public for guided tours, particularly during Heritage Days, organized in collaboration with the City of Charleroi and Mr. and Mrs. Lierneux.

This mansion-style residence stands out for its stately character and eclectic architecture, with Neo-Renaissance influences. Designed for receptions, it features a hierarchical spatial layout, with spacious living rooms, a central hall that defines the structure, and generous circulation areas.

The ground floor is organized around living rooms and dining rooms that open onto the garden, while the service areas were once confined to the basement. The heart of the house is the entrance hall, designed as a prestigious space, dominated by a richly decorated monumental staircase. The entire property reflects a particularly refined level of craftsmanship.

The interior décor blends Louis XVI and Neo-Renaissance elements: coffered ceilings, painted frescoes, floral motifs, and mascarons. A notable feature is the stained-glass window on the service staircase, composed of colored glass. The exterior façade stands out for its grandeur and the richness of its sculpted ornamentation.

The room known as the “Ambassador’s Room” has also been honored with an award from the Artisans du Patrimoine, with whom L’Alba maintains a close and active collaboration today, dedicated to passing on traditional skills and promoting the history of craftsmanship.
